Windows antivirus software, also known as Windows Defender, is built into the Windows operating system. While it often provides adequate protection, sometimes you may need to remove it to install another antivirus. This guide will show you how to uninstall Windows antivirus efficiently.
First, open the Settings app by clicking the Start menu and selecting the gear icon or simply by pressing Win + I
on your keyboard.
In the Settings window, click on Apps. This section allows you to manage all the applications installed on your system.
Scroll down the list or use the search bar to locate Windows Security. Click on it to reveal the Uninstall button.
Click on the Uninstall button and follow the on-screen instructions to remove the antivirus from your system. Note that some components may remain active until you restart your computer.
To ensure all components are completely removed, restart your computer. You can do this by clicking on the Start menu, then selecting Power and choosing Restart.
After your computer restarts, open the Settings app again and go to Apps to verify that Windows Security is no longer listed. This confirms that the antivirus has been successfully uninstalled.
Removing the built-in antivirus might expose your system to threats, so it's advisable to install another security software immediately after. Follow these steps to safely uninstall Windows antivirus and keep your system protected.
